The Flash 150th Brings Back A Major Comics Device | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

WARNING: SPOILERS for The Flash season 7, episode 17, "Heart of the Matter, Part 1".

As The Flash celebrated its big 150th episode, the milestone also saw the return of the Cosmic Treadmill. Throughout The Flash's run, the Arrowverse drama has incorporated many elements from the source material. From the heroic speedsters, the iconic villains, down to some classic DC stories, The Flash has never been shy in using the source material as much as possible. As The Flash reached its latest milestone, the show got to honor the past, present, and future.

Not only did Jay Garrick and Nora West-Allen return, but Bart West-Allen, a.k.a. Impulse, joined the Arrowverse's Flash Family. With Godspeed as the final major villain for The Flash season 7, the stakes are naturally very high. While the 150th episode got further into the August Heart mystery, The Flash brought back a major iconic device from the mythology that hasn't been seen in over a season. As the episode started out in the future, Impulse and XS chased Godspeed down to the Flash Museum.

To escape 2049, Godspeed began running on the Cosmic Treadmill, which plays a crucial role in The Flash comics. In the comics, the Cosmic Treadmill serves as a major tool for speedsters to help them travel through time more safely. The Cosmic Treadmill uses cosmic rays to power it up while the radioactive pulses allow a speedster to travel back or forth in time. Even though The Flash TV show doesn't always incorporate the device, the Cosmic Treadmill has factored into past stories. The last time it played a big role was in Crisis on Infinite Earths, when John Wesley Shipp's Flash from Earth-90 got forced to run a different Cosmic Treadmill.

Given the fact that the Cosmic Treadmill being way more practical for speedsters to go back in time, it's unclear why speedsters time travel without that device. It may simply be that it's easier to have the speedsters travel in time without the Cosmic Treadmill from a production standpoint, of course, but narratively there's no concrete explanation. One possible reason could be that even though 2049 has the actual Cosmic Treadmill, it's unclear if the one Cisco Ramon made in the present has the exact same functions.

Since the traditional Cosmic Treadmill exists in 2049, Cisco or someone else obviously must upgrade it at some point, but it's unclear exactly when this might have happened. Given The Flash's 150th episode alluded to Chester's bigger role in the future, it's possible that he may be the one to make the upgrades. It is always fun whenever The Flash goes into the future because of the potential for Easter eggs, including fans getting to see the comics-accurate version of the Cosmic Treadmill. And while it was a good bit of fan-baiting, hopefully, The Flash season 8 can find a way to bring the Cosmic Treadmill back into play, especially in the present time.
