WINONA, Minn. (WKBT) — Because of website scams tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of Winona is asking residents who pay utility bills online to use only the city’s official payment site.
“The city’s online bill-pay option is as easy and secure as any other service, and you’ll only be asked to pay what you owe on your bill and nothing more,” said city finance director Jessica Wojahn.
As increasing numbers of residents in Winona and across the country seek ways to pay bills online because pf the COVID-19 pandemic, several websites have emerged to offer this service, according to a city of Winona news release.
Some websites have been exposed as scams, while others charge users extra fees. The city has been receiving complaints from residents who have used these services and seen delays or extra charges, as well as instances when their payments were not forwarded to the city.
The city’s site is free, accessible and easy to use. Click on “Bill Pay” at the top of the homepage or visit the payment site directly at the site’s pay section.
Residents can also mail payments to the city, at City of Winona Finance Department, 207 Lafayette St. , put payments in the non-contact drop box on the Fourth Street side of City Hall or sign up for direct payment by completing the form on the city’s website.
