Wally West May Take Over the Flash Mantle From Barry Allen | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

DC has teased the possibility of Wally West carrying on the legacy of The Flash when the Scarlet Speedster's main ongoing title returns in March 2021 following the Future State event.

Future State: The Flash #1 and #2 release on Jan. 5, 2021 and Feb. 2, 2021, respectively. DC's main Flash title -- which currently stars Barry Allen -- then returns for Issue #768 the following month on March 16, with writer Jeremy Adams and artist Brandon Peterson taking over the book. "Following the two-issue Future State: The Flash in January and February, the redemption of Wally West begins," DC promises.

The Burbank-based publisher explains that following Future State, Barry will "need his former partner more than ever," and that the Flash Family will be forced to decide whether it will be Barry or Wally who should "carry the Scarlet Speedster legacy towards the future." In the months following DC’s Future State event, Barry will need his former partner more than ever. Will Barry let Wally walk away? Barry Allen and Wally West must confront the past by way of a Justice League led by Green Arrow. Ollie’s the one person Wally hasn’t talked to since Roy’s death, so pick up The Flash starting in March 2021 and see the Flash Family decide who will carry the Scarlet Speedster legacy towards the future! Will it be Barry? Or Wally?

Created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, Wally West debuted in 1959 as Kid Flash, the nephew of Barry Allen's girlfriend, Iris West. In addition to becoming a mainstay of DC's main Flash title at the time, Wally's Kid Flash went on to become a founding member of the Teen Titans.

Wally took on the mantle of the Flash in 1986 following Barry Allen's death during the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Barry later returned and was reunited with Wally as part of Final Crisis in 2008. Wally appeared to be wiped from existence following DC's New 52 relaunch in 2011, though an alternate interpretation of the character now known as Wallace West debuted in 2014. The original Wally West then returned to DC canon as part of 2016's DC Rebirth relaunch.
