Microsoft Edge 88, the end of Adobe Flash Player! – re:Jerusalem - re:Jerusalem

The death of Flash Player is inevitable. It is scheduled for the end of December and forces internet browsers to prepare.

Microsoft has positioned itself for several weeks in the face of this major software retreat. The company is preparing changes to its browsers, especially Edge (Chromium). A new report indicates that an important step was taken with the release of Microsoft Edge 88. This version posted on Canary no longer supports updates to Flash Player components. In parallel, the Dev, Beta and Stable versions have recently been updated on this subject. In other words, Microsoft Edge 88 appears to be the first edition that no longer supports this technology.

The browser is expected to hit the beta channel on December 7th, while the stable version is expected six weeks later on January 21st. Microsoft announced last September that Flash Player would be removed from its browsers in January 2021. The Edge 88 information is consistent with this schedule. On this matter, Redmond clarified

“After December 2020, you will no longer receive a security update for Adobe Flash Player. This applies to all of our Microsoft Edge Legacy and Internet Explorer 11 browsers. As of January 2021, Adobe Flash Player will be disabled by default and all versions older than KB4561600 and released in June 2020 will be blocked. Adobe Flash Player downloadable resources hosted on Microsoft websites are no longer available. “

Without patches, Flash Player vulnerabilities accumulate and become a nurturing environment for hackers. This software from Adobe already has one of its most vulnerable applications.

Microsoft says that Adobe Flash Player maintenance will be available through December 2020. After that date, the software and all of its applications will be removed. The process is transparent to the user. Everything is done by the Windows Update service. The company specifies

“An update titled” Adobe Flash Player Removal Update “will be available through Microsoft Update Catalog, Windows Update, and WSUS. Adobe Flash Player is permanently removed from Windows devices as a component. If you would like to remove Adobe Flash Player from your systems before the end of support, this update will be available for download in the Microsoft Update Catalog in autumn 2020. The update is optional for Windows Update and WSUS early in 2021 and is recommended a few months later. Please note that this update is permanent and cannot be uninstalled. “

The end of Flash Play was officially announced by Adobe in 2017.
