Chayka echoed his sentiments.

He had an emotional attachment to the club.”
The same reason that some have been critical that the team hasn’t been sold is the same reason that the Lions have been around for so long.
“He always referred to himself as the caretaker of the franchise,” Chayka said. He said, ‘I’m the caretaker. You guys are running the club, but I’m the caretaker of the franchise, not the owner.’
“You have to have a passion, you have to have that love and he told me this … a lot of times, you’ve got to have deep pockets to be an owner of a professional football team.
“The deeper the pockets … the more patience you can have. There was never any concern that he wasn’t going to be able to make payroll next year if we didn’t hit a certain number or whatever it was, and you know obviously our clubs had situations like that in the past, but there was never a question about the security of the franchise when David was the owner.
“We were very fortunate in this season that David was the owner of the club going through this whole COVID situation. He’s positioned the club to be in a strong financial position as this club transitions to a new owner or stays within the family … the club has been looked after, for the benefit of the league, and for the benefit of our fans.”
“He’s at the top of the mountain of owners in the CFL, there’s no question about that. His legacy will go on for years,” said LeLacheur. “He wanted to make sure the Lions and the CFL went on for another 100 years.”
