The Flash: DC's Dark Flashpoint Proves How Deadly the Speed Force REALLY Is - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Flashpoint #1 by Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Scott Hanna, Alex Sinclair, Jeremiah Skipper & Rob Leigh, on sale now.

The Dark Multiverse is full of dangerous and murderous versions of classic heroes and villains, including one incarnation of the Reverse-Flash who outlived Barry Allen. Finally released from his obsession with the Scarlet Speedster, this allowed the Reverse-Flash to turn his attention to the rest of the world, and make it his own.

The Reverse-Flash unleashed in the Dark Multiverse version of Flashpoint just proved how deadly the Speed Force really is, and how easily a speedster can use it to take over the world.

Dark Multiverse Reverse-Flash Flashpoint 1

In the Dark Multiverse, there's a reality where Barry Allen's attempts to empower himself failed and he died from the blast of lightning intended to give him the power to save the world. Realizing that this means he's effectively unmoored from the timeline as he knew it, Reverse-Flash takes the time to gloat over Flash's body -- even stealing the Flash Ring as a trophy -- before deciding to change the world to reflect his plans and desires.

This begins with the villain wiping out the heroes of this world with fast and sudden brutality: using his ability to phase his molecules through solid objects, Reverse-Flash quickly murders Green Lantern, Citizen Cold and Ragman before they can even realize it during a meeting at the White House. Reverse-Flash even removes the threat of the Enchantress by speeding up her aging process, reducing the powerful mystic to a skeleton within milliseconds. The only member hero present who survives this assault is Cyborg. He attempts to strike back and defeat him with a sonic-based attack, but Reverse-Flash's sheer speed allows him to move beyond the sound waves and get behind Cyborg.

Using his powers, Reverse-Flash then merely lifts his hands and splits Cyborg apart on a molecular level, effectively atomizing the hero. Cyborg ultimately only survives the attack by uploading a digital copy of his conscious online into a completely mechanical body.  It's a ruthless use of his powers, and it goes to show just how effective the Flash can be as a killer. His powers allow him to move beyond any level of reasonable comprehension. He even makes sure to showcase how powerful he really is by killing a "fraction" of the Atlantean army with his bare hands before slaying Aquaman with his own trident.  However, it's notable that even in the ruthless hands of the Reverse-Flash, the Speed Force has its limits.

When confronting a version of Superman who hasn't had access to sunlight his entire life, the Kryptonian is fast enough to at least keep up with Reverse-Flash and land some hits of his own. Coupled with his ever-increasing endurance, Reverse-Flash isn't able to do anything to effectively kill Superman, since the Kryptonian, Batman and Cyborg prove to be effective and tough enough to beat Reverse-Flash. And since he lacks any real endurance or strength outside of his speed powers, Reverse-Flash has no chance of defeating Superman in a straight fight.

It's only a last-second betrayal by Batman -- who kills Superman with a specially-designed bullet to the head -- that spares Reverse-Flash, who then travels through the time-stream again to affect the timeline by rescuing the Wayne family to prevent any form of Batman from emerging. It's then that Reverse-Flash uses the most potentially devastating and destructive capability of his powers: changing the timeline.

By creating plenty of little changes as he moves across the time-stream, the reality is eventually reshaped into one where Reverse-Flash is one of an army of superpowered beings who by the lightning bolts in their insignias seem to be loyal to Reverse-Flash. This just goes to show that, in the wrong hands, the Speed Force is next to unstoppable, especially once he starts affecting timelines.
